What’s the Real Difference?

When your tractor or machine needs parts, one question sometimes comes up:

'Should I go OEM or aftermarket?'

It’s a fair question, and the answer isn’t always black and white. We fit both depending on the situation, the machine, and the customer’s priorities.

So let’s break it down properly.

What Are OEM Parts?

OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer .

These are parts made by or for the original manufacturer of your tractor or machine. For example:

Parts supplied directly through Massey Ferguson AGCO
Components from John Deere
Genuine replacements for Kubota machines

OEM parts are designed to be an exact match for your machine, same specifications, same materials, same fit as when it left the factory.

Benefits of OEM:

Guaranteed fit
Built to original specifications
Backed by the manufacturer's warranty
Peace of mind on critical components

Downsides:

Usually more expensive
Sometimes longer lead times

What Are Aftermarket Parts?

Aftermarket parts are made by third-party manufacturers, not the original brand. But designed to fit and function in your machine. Quality can vary significantly. Some aftermarket parts are built to extremely high standards and offer excellent value for money. Others… not so much.

Benefits of Aftermarket:

Often more affordable
Widely available
Good option for older machines
Can offer equivalent performance

Downsides:

Quality varies between suppliers
Not always identical to OEM specs
May affect the manufacturer's warranty on newer machines

So… Which Should You Choose?

It depends on:

The Age of the Machine

If it’s a newer tractor still under warranty, OEM is usually the safest route.

If it’s an older workhorse that’s out of warranty, a high-quality aftermarket can make financial sense.

The Type of Repair

For critical components like:

Engine internals
Transmission parts
Electronic components

We often recommend OEM.

For:

Filters
Bearings

A trusted aftermarket brand can be a very sensible choice.

Downtime vs Cost

The Truth: Not All Aftermarket Parts Are Equal

We’ve seen:

But we’ve also fitted excellent aftermarket parts that perform just as well as OEM, at a lower cost.

On A Side Note

Many manufacturers don’t actually make every component themselves. In fact, a lot of OEM parts are produced by specialist suppliers.

For example:

Grammer – tractor and machinery seats
Hella – lighting and electrical components
Cobo – switches, columns, and electrical parts
SKF – bearings and drivetrain components
Donaldson Company – air and oil filtration systems
Bosh - Hydraulic system components

To name a few.

These companies often manufacture the original component that goes onto the tractor at the factory.

When you buy the part in branded OEM packaging, you’re sometimes paying for:

Manufacturer branding
Dealer distribution margins
Packaging and handling costs

In certain cases, we can source the same manufacturer’s part elsewhere without the tractor brand label, at a lower cost, while maintaining the same quality and specification.

Final Thoughts

OEM vs aftermarket isn’t about right or wrong.

It’s about:

Does the Right Oil Matter?

Does the Right Oil Matter?

Short answer: yes. Very much so.

Recently, we had a John Deere 5720 come into the workshop with a complaint of noisy and ineffective brakes. At first glance, it sounded like a fairly routine brake issue, but as soon as we removed the trumpet housing, the cause became clear almost instantly.

Let’s just say… it didn’t take Sherlock Holmes long to crack this one.

What We Found

On strip-down, we discovered that the friction lining on one of the brake discs had completely separated from the disc itself. With the lining gone, the metal backing plate had been running directly against the brake piston.

The result?

Severe scoring to the brake piston
Extensive internal damage
A braking system that was never going to perform as it should

While we were in there, we also removed the handbrake discs for inspection, and it’s a good job we did. They were well past their best and heading in the same direction.

At this point, the obvious question was why. So, What Caused It?

We can’t say with absolute certainty what caused the failure, but based on what we saw and our experience, we have a very strong suspicion. The wrong oil.

And that got me thinking. 'This would make a good blog case study'. So, here we go… "Does the right oil really matter?"

Why Oil Choice Is Critical in Modern Tractors

On older machines, oil choice was often a little more forgiving. Today’s tractors are a different story altogether.

Modern tractors like the John Deere 5720 rely on one oil to do multiple jobs, including:

Lubricating the transmission
Operating the hydraulic system
Cooling and protecting internal components
Providing correct friction characteristics for wet brakes and clutches

That last point is the key one here.

Wet brake systems are designed to work with oils that contain specific friction modifiers. If the wrong oil is used, even if it’s a “good quality” oil, those friction properties can be completely wrong for the system.

Over time, this can lead to:

Brake chatter or noise
Reduced braking performance
Overheating
Premature wear
Brake linings breaking down or delaminating (exactly what we saw here)

“But It’s Still Oil, Isn’t It?”

Unfortunately, not all oils are created equal.

Using an oil that almost meets the specification, or is intended for a different application, can slowly cause damage that isn’t immediately obvious. The tractor may continue to work, but internally, things are deteriorating.

By the time symptoms show up, the damage is often already done.

The Cost of Getting It Wrong

In this case, what could have been avoided with the correct oil has resulted in:

Brake disc replacement
Brake piston damage
Additional labour
Increased downtime

All of which could have been prevented.

Our Advice

Always use the oil specified by the manufacturer
If in doubt, ask, don’t guess
Be cautious of mixing oils or topping up with “whatever’s to hand”
Regular servicing isn’t just about filters, oil choice matters just as much

How Often Do You Grease Up?

We see all sorts come through the workshop, from well-looked-after, showroom-condition tractors to others that are, well, less showroom-condition. We get it. Tractors are workhorses, tools that make everyday jobs easier. And in fairness, most of those workhorses are looked after reasonably well.

But one simple job is often overlooked: greasing.

A quick check over with a grease gun can make a huge difference. It’s not a magical cure, and it won’t stop parts from wearing forever, but regular greasing does slow wear, protects seals, and significantly extends the life of key components, saving downtime and costly repairs further down the line.

Recently, we had a Kubota M5111 with a front loader in our workshop for servicing and repairs. While carrying out the service, our technician lifted the front axle to change the oil in the final drives. That’s when excessive movement was noticed, along with a steering joint that was very close to failing (Something you definitely don’t want to discover while travelling down the road).

With the front axle lifted, the components were stripped down for inspection. It quickly became clear that a lack of regular greasing had allowed dirt and moisture past the seals. Over time, this had caused severe wear to the bushes and swivel pins. The wear was so bad that the swivel casting itself had been damaged, and both sides would need to be replaced. At this stage, simply fitting new bushes would have been pointless.

This is where preventative maintenance really proves its value. The constant pushing, lifting, and turning required for loader work significantly increases the load on the tractor’s front axle, steering system, pivot pins and bearings, making regular maintenance essential. Regular greasing and inspections would have significantly slowed the wear. Instead, what could have been a straightforward maintenance job turned into a much larger and more expensive repair.

Preventative maintenance doesn’t just save money, it improves reliability, reduces downtime, and keeps machines safe to operate. A few minutes with a grease gun can genuinely make the difference between a machine staying productive or ending up off the road and in the workshop.

As we come to the end of another busy year at JJ Farm Services, we just wanted to take a moment to say a genuine thank you.

Your support, whether through repairs, servicing, parts, or machinery sales, has kept us flat out all year long. And truth be told, that’s exactly how we like it. Every tractor in the workshop, every machine out on demo, every phone call and message… it all adds up, and we’re grateful for every bit of it.

This year has brought us a bit of everything: full services and major overhauls, transmission rebuilds, electrical fault-finding, engine strip-downs, clutch jobs, differential repairs, front axles rebuilt, and plenty of new machinery heading out the door. There’s been no shortage of challenges, but that’s what keeps the job interesting.

A Rare Find: Rebuilding a Cab-less Massey Ferguson 5455 for Specialist Work

This month, we’ve had a Massey Ferguson 5455 in for a major overhaul, but not your typical 5455. This one is cab-less, and tractors like it are becoming increasingly hard to find here in the UK.

Why a Cab-less Tractor?

The customer uses the tractor inside polytunnels, where space is tight, and manoeuvrability is everything. A tractor with this horsepower, size, and the ability to work safely under cover without a cab roof catching or restricting movement is a rare and valuable tool.

Rather than replacing it, the owner chose to invest in a full rebuild, extending its working life for many years to come.

A Complete Transformation in the Workshop

Over the past month or so, our technician Wayne has carried out an extensive list of repairs, upgrades, and refurbishments to bring this machine back to top condition.

Rebuilt Dyna-4 Gearbox

The heart of the tractor needed attention, so we stripped and rebuilt the Dyna-4 gearbox to ensure smooth gear changes and reliable operation during stop-start work in tight environments.

Forward & Reverse Clutch Pack Rebuild

Essential for quick directional changes, especially in confined spaces, the shuttle clutch pack was fully rebuilt for crisp, dependable engagement.

New Rear Fenders

The old fenders were damaged and tired, so a brand-new set was fitted to improve safety and appearance.

New Plastic Side Panels & Dash Panels

A fresh set of panels not only sharpens the look but also protects vital components from dust, rain and debris, vital for a tractor with no cab to protect it from the elements.

New Operator Switches

With many original switches worn out, we replaced them all to ensure full functionality and reliability.

New Seat

A comfortable operator is a more productive operator; the new seat modernises the driving experience and provides much-needed support.

Full Linkage Rebuild

The rear linkage system was completely rebuilt using new components throughout, restoring accuracy and lifting performance.

New Front Diff & Pivot Housing

Worn splines in the front differential meant it was time for a replacement. We also fitted a new pivot housing to restore smooth steering and front-end durability.

New Pivot Bushes

Fresh bushes ensure proper articulation at the front axle, reducing wear and improving handling.

Full Service

The tractor received fresh engine oil, filters, and a complete inspection — the finishing touch to the mechanical overhaul.

General Tidy-Up & Freshen-Up

Finally, we gave the machine a full tidy-up to make sure it not only works like new but looks the part too.

We see all kinds of tractors come through the workshop, from the newest models to the true classics that have earned their keep many times over. One of those classics is the Massey Ferguson 390, a real favourite on many farms for its simplicity, reliability, and no-nonsense power.

We recently had a customer’s MF 390 in for clutch issues, but, as often happens with older machines, the visit turned into much more worthwhile preventive maintenance.

Clutch Replacement

The tractor was struggling to engage properly, so our first job was to fit a new 13" clutch plate, along with a new flywheel, and fresh clutch bearings and bearing carrier.

These parts are essential for smooth operation, especially on a machine that handles daily, heavy farm work.

Replacing these components ensures:

Smoother gear changes
Improved pulling power
Reduced wear on the transmission
More years of reliable use

Fuel Pump Replacement

While it was in the workshop, we noticed the fuel pump was leaking diesel — a common issue on older tractors.

To prevent:

Wasted fuel
Contamination

Inconsistent engine performance

The pump had been on there for a few thousand hours, so the best thing to do is to fit a brand new fuel pump, solving the leak and improving running quality at the same time.

Full Engine Service

With the tractor already split and on the ramp, this was the perfect opportunity to carry out a full engine service.

We fitted:

Fresh engine oil
New oil filter
New fuel filter

Routine servicing is one of the best ways to extend the life of older tractors, keeping them dependable through every season.

Speed-Shift Fault

At JJ Farm Services, we believe in doing the job right, and that starts with a proper diagnosis. One of our recent workshop jobs was a Massey Ferguson 398 that had lost its Speed-Shift function. Here’s how we identified the problem and carried out a reliable repair.

Step 1: Starting with the Basics

Before we get into any major strip-down, we always begin with the simple checks. The first step was to inspect the hydraulic system, making sure the clutch pack was receiving the correct pressure. Without that pressure, the Speed-Shift can’t engage, but in this case, everything was spot on.

Step 2: Electrical Checks

Next, we turned our attention to the electrical side. A faulty solenoid or wiring issue could easily cause Speed-Shift failure. We tested the solenoid and confirmed that it was operating correctly. With both hydraulic and electrical systems working as they should, we were left with one conclusion…

Step 3: Internal Fault – Time to Split

The issue had to be internal. That meant splitting the tractor to access the Speed-Shift unit — not a small job, but necessary to get to the root of the problem. Once inside, the fault became clear: a failed Belleville spring. This small but crucial component had given out, causing the loss of function.

Step 4: Repair and Replace

With the Speed-Shift unit removed, we ordered the necessary replacement parts, including a new Belleville spring. While we had it apart, we also fitted a fresh set of friction plates. Preventative maintenance like this is a smart move, no point putting worn parts back in when everything's already open.

Why It Matters

Jobs like this highlight the importance of a thorough diagnostic approach. By checking each system methodically, we avoid unnecessary work and make sure we get straight to the root of the issue.

Why Coolant System Care Matters

Recently, our workshop welcomed a Massey Ferguson 7618 for a scheduled transmission repair and service. What started as a routine job soon highlighted the importance of preventive maintenance – and why small issues left unchecked can lead to costly downtime.

The Service & What We Found

After carrying out the service and running the engine, our technician noticed that the tractor wasn’t reaching its optimal operating temperature. Instead, it was running cold – a clear sign that something wasn’t right.

The most likely cause? Faulty Thermostats.

To confirm, we removed the thermostat housing and found the root of the problem: a significant build-up of sludge in the cooling system.

Why Coolant Maintenance Matters

Sludge in a coolant system forms when coolant isn’t regularly changed or maintained properly. Over time, it can:

Restrict coolant flow
Prevent the engine from reaching normal operating temperature
Lead to overheating or further component damage

In this case, the thermostats had failed and stuck open, preventing the engine from running as it should. While the Massey Ferguson 7600 series are reliable workhorses, even the best machines need regular coolant checks to stay in top condition.

The Outcome

With replacement parts fitted and the system flushed, the tractor was soon repaired and back to work. Thanks to catching the issue during a service, downtime was limited to just a couple of days – far less than the costly delays that can come from ignoring coolant maintenance.

2023 Calendar Competition

Following on from the success of our previous Calendar Competition, we are pleased to announce that we will be running the competition again.

We are keen to get you involved in our 2023 calendar and will select 13 of our customer's photographs to showcase.

This year we’re looking for scenic shots of our lovely local area, so far this year we’ve seen striking sunrises and sunsets, fabulous farming shots, and even some snow!

The winning 13 photographers will receive 2 copies of our calendar, and an A3 size canvas print of your winning photo!

Photos must be submitted in original high-resolution and emailed to

We will be closed from the 24th December to the 3rd of January. However, if you have an urgent breakdown please call the usual number.

We would just like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you for your ongoing support this year, here's to 2022!

Coronavirus Covid-19 Update

This notice is effective from 5th November 2020, until further notice.

In light of the latest Coronavirus (Covid-19) advice, we need to prioritise the well-being and safety of our employees, customers and wider public. We are monitoring the situation closely and will be responding to the rapidly changing situation daily.

We will be continuing to operate as usual wherever possible and notify you of any changes as necessary. We will all be following and adhering to Government Guidelines.

Although our Accounts Office is staffed, we ask that no visitors enter the Main Office. We are contactable on the normal landline number, or our email addresses listed below.

Our Parts department is also still open and staffed, however the shop door is locked. Please telephone in advance or on your arrival. We ask that you only make urgent and necessary trips to visit the premises for parts collections. Please refrain from making any un-necessary visits, and when you do visit please can we ask that you also follow Government Guidelines. If you would prefer parts to be posted out to you rather than collected, this is not a problem.

We are also happy to take orders over the phone and leave boxes/bags with parts outside for collection by yourself.

Our Service department will continue to operate as normal, with increased awareness to cleanliness when working. Our maintenance and breakdown cover will remain the same, but appropriate precautions will be taken.
